Mod Question

Ok, this is a two part Question in reality. #1- are the Rfactor mod convertable to NR2k3? Kinda the was Desmod is doing with the Nationwide models? #2 - if so How can I go about doing this.... They have great mods and would really like ot bring some over. I know that this would take alot of work, but i think with some patience and some help, i may be able to get a better UMP Modified, and possibly some Sprints....

Re: Mod Question

#1- If I remember Correctly, The NR2K3 cars are convertable to rFactor, but not the other way around. The Trans Am mod was converted to rFactor.

The VHR mod is a good example. Its not popular due to the guy (Corvette Dave) taking models from mods and other makers. Dont quote me...but i think thats the case.

#2- I guess my answer trumps questions #2. If you haven't already, rFactor Central has a lot of good mods and tracks (Kinda the Nr2k3 tracks version, but with rFactor).

The BOZ sprint car mod is excellent (Scott hahn painted me a sprin for it. I wish i could find him. All his stuff just dissapeared.)

As for UMP mods, Im clueless there...

I hope this helps, Im sure someone around here has better answers than I do...

Re: Mod Question

If you have the 3d models already, then yes, you can use them in nr2003. well.. sort of. You will need to make sure the poly count matches that of which nr2003 allows for mods first.

Just to be clear though, there are no magic mod making programs out there that let you import a model and click buttons and have them appear in the game. It's a very complicated process of writing the required psg scripts. If you are serious on this, then you should visit the forums over at theuspits.com and read through the tutorial threads. Start with that and then ask questions if something confuses you.

Re: Mod Question

By the way Jonny, you are thinking of tracks. An nr2003 track can be converted to rfactor rather easily, but only about 50% of an rfactor track can be converted to nr2003.

No, I meant cars. I forgot where I read it, but before the old forum went down for this new one, I had found the Wildfire Trans Am converted to rFactor.

Thats what I meant, and like I said, people have better answers than me. I was talking cars, but didnt know about the tracks.

So, if I understand correctly, Say the oxford plains track recently released, Someone can take the track, fix a few details, and them post it in rFactor as a downloadable track?

So...if thats true, why do most of the short tracks suck for rFactor? Lol

Per the last question, 50% the Game not doing them justice and 50% that it seems the NR2003 comminity stopped putting up with that kind of piracy.

Re: Mod Question

I think its more a problem with someone taking credit for someone elses work. Which is common for rFactor

And Tracks take time. Not a lot of track makers exist anymore. Some moved on to Iracing and rFactor. didnt IRacing hire a lot of people who modded NR2K3 to work for Iracing?

Re: Mod Question

iRacing is essentially Project Wildfire members.

Most other modders either went to rFactor/ASR/takeyourpick games, or just gave up.

Re: Mod Question

Really, really simplified, this is why you can't do much with the car shapes.
In N2K3 you can modify just about all .3DO files, except the 3DO files that make up the car shape (under the Series folder). Here, the 3DO files are "stacked" where all 4 car shapes are combined into one file. That way N2K3 only has to load one file into memory and display the correct car shape using less memory and faster frame rates.
If it used separate .3DO files like TSO track items, you could load up a couple GTP cars and a couple Trans-Am cars, all together. Beleve me, I have tried to do this to make up a Daytona Rolex series mod. It don't work. The 3DO files are merged using a .PSG script which only a few people understand how to build. A PSG script has thousands of lines of code. There is a package of utilities over at theUSPITS that contains all the info but I don't have the time or smarts to puzzle it out. Some do, and they make mods.

Remember this is a program written 10 years ago. Things are done differently now since there is a glut of processor and memory power. Back in 2003, they did the best they could given the capabilities that existed then. emoticon
