Floating fence

I've ran into this problem before multiple times, I made my fence in sandbox, and it does not even come close to touching the ground, I fixed this problem with another track before, but I can't for the life of me remember how. I even opened up the track that I fixed it on, and didn't notice anything different (except for the fact that it isn't floating) I asked a fellow trackmaker that I race in a league with, and he knows exactly what I'm talking about, but also has no idea how to fix it. I'll post a pic if nessacery, but I'm assuming the trackmakers here will know what I'm talking about and hopefully know how to fix it. Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: Floating fence

My first guess would be that the mip itself doesn't have fence all the way down.
If that's not the case it could be the visual width of the w-section. Sometimes fences and walls look funny if they don't have a texture on the wall far/near part. Lowering the visual width makes it a lot less apparent though.

Re: Floating fence

Mips have a designation to repeat in U and V. That might not be set correctly on that particular mip.

In the F and W textures box, there is a section that lets you change the U and V settings.
First, pick the right facet - top, left right, etc, so you are editing the correct side.
Next check the box for Override Default Tex Parameters.
Uncheck the box for U. Diddle with the values. See what it does.
Uncheck the box for V. Diddle with those values. See what it does.
Use the camera view in Sandbox and scope right in on where you are working so you can see the change in real time.

U controls the horizontal settings, V controls the Vertical. The second box is what controls the motion.
If the mip does not have the U and V set to repeat, you only have the single mip image to move around. If it is set to repeat, the mip automatically starts over when it runs out of image.

Re: Floating fence

Also make sure your walls-fence w-sections are laid down to the left side of your elevated(Banked) x-section... otherwise they will appear to be floating through any banked turned emoticon

Re: Floating fence

riviera, I'll try another fence today

amtronic, I messed with those values for 3 hours yesterday with camera view open on the side. No matter what I do it won't go down to the ground. I'll try grabbing a fence from a papy track real quick and seeing what that does!

Thanks guys!

Sorry Danny, didn't see your post. Looks like we posted at the same time, lol. I tried a bristol fence from papy, which was even worse, then I tried a fence from Jacksonville and it works perfectly! Thanks guys!

You can also get weird behavor from a wall if you do not have a mip assigned to all 5 facets. Sometimes the Straight/Perpendicular setting affects things too......

Re: Floating fence

Here's the rule to the U and V values, from Butteer's tutorial at theuspits.com...

Find the length and heights in meters in sandbox, divide by 100 to get centimeters. Then divide that number by the corresponding pixel count in the mip. That is the number to plug into the box.

Example - You have a wall section that is 10 meters long. The wall mip you want to assign to it is 128 x 64. 1000cm / 128 pixels = 7.81
