Which way is North?

Issue: The value for North is often set incorrectly in a track's track.ini file. This controls which direction the wind blows, and has both an effect on your cars performance and also animated TSO's like the American flag at Daytona (example used).

Discalaimer: I am using the Daytona_RC_FRL_v2 track as an example because it has many animated flags present in the track. This makes it easy to visualize the issue being discussed. Many tracks (including some of my own) have this issue.

Disclaimer #2: This has no effect on where the Sun is relative to the track or shadows/solar effects from the sun. That is controlled from within the track.ptf file and cannot easily be adjusted without editing the track. The sun and the wind are controlled separately in N2K3. This post only addresses the wind issue. Since wind speed and direction have an effect on performance it should be set accurately. For the example I set the wind from the North at 30mph to get the flag out there so it could be seen.

Picture #1 shows the Daytona track with the original value for track_north_angle = 1.

Picture #2 shows the Daytona track with the correct value for
track_north_angle = 220

Picture #3 is a chart that can be used to find and set the correct value.

How-to follows in next post.

Re: Which way is North?

How-to:
Take picture #3 and print it out. On the right side at the 3 O'clock position is 0 (zero) degrees. (I didn't make the chart I found it).
Take it and "stand" on the start/finish line of the track. Look down the track with the 0 point of the chart pointed in that direction.

The picture below shows the Daytona track example, with the chart overlayed at the Start/Finish line. The true direction of North is shown by the arrow. The value from the chart is 220. Putting this value into the track.ini field for track_north_angle = 220 gives the result shown in picture #2 in the above post.

You can now take the chart and use it on any track to correctly set the wind direction. Either by laying the chart on the track, or by just fixing the track in your mind, looking down the track at the Start/Finish line, and choosing the correct direction for North. For best accuracy use Google Earth.

Re: Which way is North?

Thats one of the reasons i like to build my tracks over a google map image so they are oriented correctly for a 0 value.
