***AI Pack Racing***

Where (in [sign in to see URL] or [sign in to see URL]) do I edit or fix to get the pack to run 'less spread out' at Daytona and 'Dega? tracks are run as "No Plate SS" for more realism. thnx in advanced

 tracks are newest from RR
 Real ratings (all of 2013 combined)

 same result for all 4mods
 G6
 nns
 cws
 arca

 They start out fine for 1st 2laps, than they spread out, than half of the field groups up while the top 10 cars pull away in there own 'shuffle.' Also, the leader gets a MASSIVE jumps on restarts.
-or if some1 could send me the [sign in to see URL]'s from 'Tona that is MOST realistic (2014 test), that would be fine too, thnx in advanced

You need to modify the [sign in to see URL] file in the specific track folder. Look for the line

ai_drafting_distance = <value>

and change it to a lower number. Write down the original number so you can restore it to original.

The way I change an .INI value without losing the original is to "comment it out". No paper or .TXT file to lose, or get confused.

EXAMPLE
ai_drafting_distance = [sign in to see URL] ; [sign in to see URL]

Where [sign in to see URL] would be the original, and the [sign in to see URL] would be the edited value. Just like in every other part of the .INI the program "ignores" anything after the semi-colon. To restore original take out the

[sign in to see URL] ;

And back to the original value you return.

Playing with the values below will change the way they behave also. Lowering the numbers will make them run closer together and take more chances that there is enough room to make a move. Especially off the corner.

ai_dlat_pad = (how close side-by-side)
ai_squeeze_pcnt = (how much racing room)

I'm not an AI guru by any stretch. The only thing I know about them is by "trial, error, and really screwed up". emoticon

But maybe zero on the squeeze point might be an issue. If they give each other enough room to run without bumping, then they won't be slowing each other up and splitting up the pack by losing momentum at these and other plate tracks.

Just a guess. Like I said I'm no expert.

BTW, have you tried comparing .INI files from different Daytona and Tally versions. You may see some pattern that may lead you in the right direction.

How do you figure the "no plate realism" factor should result in pack racing?
On any track where car performance is not restricted, the cars are going to string out over time. That's reality. Even on a short track the cars string out, it's just the short acceleration distance and reduced real estate that keep the cars closer together.

As has already been pointed out, the only way to slow down the spread is to reduce the ai_drafting_distance value. If that results in more wrecks than you're willing to accept, then you're SOL.
The only way to eliminate it, i.e. keep the cars in a pack, is to run the same (or very close to the same) ai ratings (Vehicle) for all the cars.

Yea, I just reverted back to my original settings. is there something in [sign in to see URL] or papi_ai that effects the 'players' car? I want to be able to race same speeds as AI with my tape high, but I cant put it past 40% w.o running away. (Daytona/Dega)

NR2003 settings:
Driving Mode - Simulation
Computer Opponents - Strength - Auto/Manual %

Track considerations:
THE TROUBLE, WHAT'S POSSIBLE, HOW TO DO IT / ai speed... too fast, too slow
